Calling all Rock hounders!

Our rugged coastline is home to an impressive line up of gems, rocks, and minerals.

Here in humboldt County yoou can find serpentine, benitoite, jade, agate, jasper, moonstone, quartz, epidote, and rhodonite. Famous for the gold rush, there remain many places in California where rockhounds can hope to find gold and native copper.

As the tides creep up and down our beaches, the ocean takes turns covering and uncovering a small area of coast called the intertidal zone. It spends some of its time underwater, but it’s exposed to us land-dwellers for exploration when the tides recede. Pools trapped between rocks stay as the rest of the ocean leaves them behind. Get a small look at what we’re usually missing beneath the waves.

Each year the Friends of the Dunes holds the local sandsculpture competition at Samoa Dunes in August. Ask your host, Lindsey, to show you how it's done. She has won two awards in 2020 for her sculpture "Siren's Song", the Peoples Choice Award and Most Dedicated Digger.
